| Annuity |
An agreement by an insurer to make periodic payments for a specified period of time. |
| Arbitrage |
The simultaneous purchase and sale of an asset in order to profit from a difference in the price, thereby avoiding risk. |
| Asset |
Anything having commercial or exchange value that is owned by a business, individual, or country. |
| Balance Sheet |
A financial report showing the status of a company’s assets, debts, and equity as of a specific date. |
| Basis Point |
Used to indicate the change in yields on bonds, bills, and notes. One basis point is .01%. |
| Bear |
An investor with a pessimistic outlook on the market, believing share prices will fall. |
| Bear Market |
A prolonged period of declining prices in the stock market. |
| Beneficiary |
The person who will receive the cash proceeds from the life insurance policy upon the insured’s death. |
| Bid and Ask Prices |
An offer to buy at a specified price is a bid. The price a seller is willing to accept for a security is an ask price. |
| Blue Chip |
Common stock of a nationally recognized company that is known for stable and reliably long records of profit growth. |
| Bond |
A debt investment in which a bondholder loans money to a corporation or government that borrows the funds for a defined period of time at a fixed interest rate. |
| Book Value |
The value at which an asset is carried on a balance sheet. The cost of an asset minus accumulated depreciation. |
| Broker |
An agent who acts as an intermediary between a buyer and seller of securities. |
| Bull |
An investor with a positive outlook on the market, believing share prices will rise. |
| Bull Market |
A prolonged period of rising prices in the stock market. |
| Capital |
Financial assets such as cash, machinery, and equipment. |
| Capital Gain |
The positive difference between the purchase price and selling price of an asset; a profit. |
| Capital Loss |
The negative difference between the purchase price and selling price of an asset. |
| Capitalization |
The total value of all of a company's outstanding shares. Is calculated by multiplying a company's shares outstanding by the current market price of one share. |
| Cash Flow |
An analysis of all the changes of the cash account. |
| Cash Value |
The amount available in cash upon cancellation of an insurance policy before it becomes payable upon death or maturity. |
| Certificate |
Formal declaration that can be used to document a fact. |
| Certificate of Deposit |
A savings certificate issued by a bank that pays interest. |
| Commission |
Fee paid to a broker for executing a trade. |
| Common Stock |
Units of ownership of a public corporation. |
| Coverage |
The amount of the insurance policy. |
| Death Benefit |
The amount of money the beneficiary would receive in the death of a covered person. |
| Depreciation |
Consumption of capital during production or amortization of fixed assets. |
| Derivatives |
A financial contract whose value is based on the performance of an underlying financial asset, market index, or other investment. |
| Discount |
The difference between a bond’s market price and its face value. |
| Diversification |
The spreading out of risk by dividing assets among a variety of securities. |
